The Isle of Man Enlarged!
The Runway End Safety Area (RESA) Project
There doesn't seem to be any official web page covering the major civil engineering project underway
extending the island into the sea at the eastern end of Ronaldsway Airport, so here are a few pictures to show the work.
The aim of the project is to bring the main runway up to the future international standards with regard to the Runway End Safety Areas,
which provide protection for aircraft and their occupants in the event of an aircraft overrunning the runway. At Ronaldsway they will also
provide 'starter strips', increasing the take of run available to departing aircraft. The work at the western end is now complete and in use,
the following pictures show the work at the eastern end where a new promontory is being built out into the sea.
